Gomez expects to be in ´ideal shape´ at Brazil 2014

Fiorentina and Germany striker Mario Gomez believes he will be back in ideal shape before the FIFA World Cup.

The luckless 28-year-old suffered another knee injury in March, a blow less severe than the one that saw him sidelined for five months with serious ligament damage in his right knee.

Gomez is out with a slight tear to the ligaments in his left knee, but appears likely to be fit to represent Germany at Brazil 2014.

The former Bayern Munich striker said he should be back close to full fitness for the start of the World Cup on June 12.

I think that I can get back in ideal shape before June or July, Gomez told Sky Sport in Germany.

There is still a long time to go.

Germany coach Joachim Low will be keen to have Gomez in his squad f…

´Do it for me, Sir Bobby and England´ – Eriksson backs Southgate to bring Euro 2024 glory

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has asked Gareth Southgate to do it for me, Sir Bobby [Robson] and England in the Euro 2024 final.

For the second consecutive European Championships, England booked a place in the final after beating the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

In Euro 2020, the Three Lions lost 3-2 on penalties to Italy after playing out a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes. This year, they will face Spain in the showcase match in Berlin on Sunday.

England have never won the Euros, with their last major tournament win coming in the 1966 World Cup.

Eriksson took charge of the national team between 2001 and 2006 and was in charge of their so-called golden generation , though they failed to make it past the quarter-finals of either …

From receiving threats and leaving Russia, to facing Liverpool – Kvaratskhelia´s rollercoaster 2022

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia played just 10 times for Lokomotiv Moscow, and only one of those appearances was as a starter.

Yet, his father claimed in 2020 that then-Lokomotiv coach Yury Syomin cried actual tears when Kvaratskhelia said he would not be staying beyond the end of his initial loan agreement. The youngster also apparently broke down.

Seemingly the teenaged Kvaratskhelia made quite the impression on his coach, though curiously not enough to play on a regular basis. It s fair to say Kvaratskhelia s decision to move on and ultimately join fellow Russian Premier League side Rubin Kazan was a smart one.

After that, I was glad my son was in Rubin, where they let him play football, Kvaratskhelia Sr added, and it was in Kazan where the talented winger began to con…

China v Iran: Queiroz wants to exorcise 2015 quarter-final

Carlos Queiroz is hoping Iran can exorcise the pain of four years ago when they go up against China in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup.

The top-ranked side in the continent have not lifted the trophy since 1976 and were defeated by neighbours Iraq in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Australia at the same stage in 2015.

Head coach Queiroz acknowledges that in knockout football there is little margin for error but urged his team – 2-0 winners over Gulf Cup champions Oman in the last 16 –  to embrace the challenge in Abu Dhabi.

No two games in football are ever the same, in football it is always a different story, said Queiroz, whose team are undefeated in the competition.

The game versus China is a new game, a new adventure, and one in which …

On This Day in 2009: West Ham and Sheff Utd agree settlement over Carlos Tevez

West Ham and Sheffield United reached an out-of-court settlement over the long-running Carlos Tevez affair on this day in 2009.

The Blades had demanded compensation of up to £45million following their relegation from the Premier League in 2007 – a demotion they insisted would not have occurred had Tevez not excelled for the London club.

West Ham had breached rules over third-party ownership when signing Tevez and his fellow Argentina international Javier Mascherano the previous summer.

The pair had arrived at Upton Park in a surprise, headline-grabbing move from Brazilian club Corinthians but it later emerged the rights to the players were partially owned by their agent Kia Joorabchian’s company, Media Sports Investment.

This contravened Premier Leag…

Falcons vs Seahawks Week 3 Picks and Predictions: Running Under the Total

The Atlanta Falcons are winless through the opening two weeks of the 2022 season but, to their credit, they have been competitive against quality teams, dropping games to the Super Bowl champion Rams and playoff-hopeful Saints by a combined five points.

This week they will face off against the Seattle Seahawks, who followed up their Week 1 Russell Wilson spoiler party with a 27-7 dud against the 49ers.

This NFC matchup pits two underappreciated defenses against reclaimed quarterbacks in Marcus Mariota and Geno Smith. Will Mariota lead the Falcons to their first win with him as the full-time starter — or can Geno and Pete Carroll recreate some of that Week 1 magic?

I’ll tackle that question in my free NFL picks, while also breaking down the Week 3 …

Colts vs Ravens Odds, Picks, and Predictions Week 3: Catch Lamar If You Can

What do a kid who ate a Lego brick, me holding my wife’s purse, and the Indianapolis Colts all have in common?

Answer: They’re all playing the “waiting game”.

With rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson in concussion protocols, the Colts are watching and waiting to see who their starter will be when they visit the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.

If Richardson sits, Indianapolis has a capable backup in Gardiner Minshew. And that then poses the question to football bettors: how much is the difference in QB worth to the spread?

As it stands, Baltimore is a sizable home favorite despite having injury issues of its own. A thinning Ravens roster has become commonplace in recent seasons, with the offensive line missing starters, the d…
